If youāve ever raised rabbits, you already knowāit's not all fluff and fun. And if you havenāt, Iād love to give you a little behind-the-scenes look at what it truly takes to raise healthy, happy bunnies here on the farm.
From time to time, when I post rabbits for sale, I receive messages like:
Can you meet halfway?
Do you deliver?
Will you take $5?
I completely understand why those questions are asked. On the surface, it may seem like Iām simply trying to rehome a few extra bunnies. But thereās a lot more involved than meets the eyeāand Iād love to explain why that $10 price tag doesnāt reflect the full investment of time, care, and resources these little ones require.
š” Raising Rabbits Is a Real Commitment
Rabbits need safe, well-ventilated housingāsolid hutches that are protected from weather and predators, and spacious enough for exercise and comfort. A box and some carrots wonāt cut it.
They also need daily care. This includes:
Feeding and watering
Cleaning and refreshing bedding
Health checks and nail trimming
Time spent socializing and observing behavior
Rabbits are sensitive animals, and they thrive with consistent, attentive care.
š Bedding & Cleanliness Matter
One of the often-overlooked costs of raising rabbits is bedding. I use high-quality, safe materialsālike kiln-dried pine āthat absorb moisture and help keep the bunnies healthy.
These materials arenāt cheap, and they need to be replaced regularly. Keeping cages clean isnāt optionalāitās essential to prevent illness and discomfort.
š„ Good Nutrition Is Non-Negotiable
My bunnies enjoy a well-balanced diet: unlimited hay, quality pellets, fresh greens, and the occasional healthy treat. Clean water is always available, and dishes and bottles are washed daily.
I donāt cut corners here because I believe every bunny deserves the best chance at a long, happy lifeāeven if itās just a ā$10 bunny.ā
š Time Is a Big Part of the Equation
Between morning and evening routines, cleaning, grooming, health checks, and general upkeep, I spend several hours a week caring for these animals. And that doesnāt count prep time, repairs, or emergency situations.
So, while I choose to price my bunnies affordably to keep them accessible to loving homes, the time and effort behind them are significant.
š Why I Donāt Offer Meetups for Low-Cost Rabbits
This part can be tough to explain without sounding harshābut I hope you understand. Meeting up for a $10 sale simply isnāt practical. The cost of gas, the time away from the farm, and the stress on the animals all outweigh the price.
When I say āfarm pick-up only,ā itās not out of inconvenienceāit's out of practicality and care. You're always welcome to visit the farm, meet the animals, ask questions, and even learn a little about how we do things here. I love sharing that experience!
Thank you for understanding, and more importantly, for taking an interest in giving a bunny a loving home. When you buy from a small farm like mine, youāre supporting much more than a transactionāyouāre honoring the work, care, and heart that goes into every animal raised here.
If you have any questions, Iām always happy to help. š¾healthy bunny and a smile.
But youāll have to come to me. š
